The weather’s getting cooler, the days are getting shorter—that can only mean one thing, school is back in session. With a brand new semester about to begin, you have a ton to worry about—your classes, school supplies, dorm room, etc. While we can’t help with all of that (or any of that, unfortunately), we can help you make the grade by way of some stellar back-to-school hairstyles. We rounded up enough styles and cuts to last you through the month and then some, so don’t try them all at once.

Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid turned this simple hairstyle into a huge trend this year. And it has quickly become everyone’s favorite way to zhoosh up the classic ponytail. Simply put your hair into a ponytail (generally at mid-height, though it can be done at any length) and braid three or more sections of hair to create this multi-pony look.

The butterfly haircut is everywhere right, with its popularity skyrocketing on TikTok. The start of the school year is always a great time to get a new haircut, so why not try the trendiest back-to-school hairstyle there is? With the unique positioning of the layers, you can wear it long or pin some layers up to fake short hair. Plus, it gives off major ‘70s vibes that lends itself to tons of movement and volume.

For days when you’re running late to your next lecture but don’t want to toss your hair up into a messy bun or high ponytail, add some baby braids throughout your strands. The beauty of these braids is that they don’t have to be perfect. Honestly, the messier the hair, the better.

Who doesn’t own a claw clip (or 20)? Twist up your hair in this classic claw clip hairstyle to keep your strands off your face on hot days or in between washes. Keep one in your gym bag to secure your sweaty hair after an intense workout, too.

This flirty back-to-school hairstyle looks phenomenal on short hair, though can really be recreated on any length. It’s perfect for those classes you have with your crush so you can really snag their attention. All you’ll need to recreate this look is some hair gel, a flat iron, and a stronghold hairspray.

TikTok is all about this braided headband hairstyle as of late. And, they’ve showcased a number of ways to wear it, including bedazzling it with hair gems. Though it may look like an intricate style, it’s actually pretty simple. Section out two strands of hair at the front of your head, braid them, then cross them over the top of your head to form the crown and secure the ends behind your ears with a few bobby pins. You can fluff them up a bit to create a more noticeable braid or add some additional accessories to give it a little something extra.

Want a low-maintenance hairstyle that still offers plenty of versatility? Faux locs are calling your name. These commitment-free dreads are a great protective style for those who want to dabble in locs but don’t want to completely devote themselves to the hairstyle.

Forget the Rachel, go with the Monica. This ‘90s-inspired short haircut exudes main character energy and is fairly easy to maintain. With a tousled texture and a mix of layers, you don’t really need to do that much styling because it’s meant to look a little disheveled. All the more reason to sleep in before heading to class.

The ‘90s are back and better than ever. With the advancements in hair tools and products, creating a ‘90s blowout has never been easier, nor has it ever turned out cuter. In fact, our five-step tutorial will help you get the look faster than you ever thought possible.

We’re all in on the boyfriend bob. Inspired by the heartthrobs of yesteryears (think ‘90s boy band members), this chic back-to-school hairstyle will surely help you stand out from your classmates. The cut is a bit short, though still has some length to create a bit of movement and dimension.

Yes, bangs are always a good idea for a back-to-school hairstyle—especially bottleneck bangs. While curtain bangs are still trending, this fringe flatters every hair type and face shape. Even better? They’re the perfect face framers for when your hair is pulled up.

Arguably the easiest back-to-school hairstyle on this list, tucked-back strands work for any class or school event. And, not much is required on your end to create this look. Part your hair down the middle, slick down the front pieces with some gel, then tuck them behind your ears and secure with a bobby pin.

Update an otherwise basic braid by weaving a scarf through it and securing it at the end. You can match the scarf to your outfit, but we like to pair a bold scarf with a more muted look to really make it pop. It does take work to pull off this look and we want everyone to notice.

Sure, you can stick with your messy bun as your back-to-school hairstyle of choice, but why not elevate the look a little with the undone bun? Similar to the messy bun, this look isn’t meant to be pristine, though it’s a bit more put together.

We’ve seen a huge shift in favor of air-dried texture over polished styles, and we’re here for it. Some days you need to take a quick shower and let your hair dry on your way to class. Depending on your hair type, there are a few things to keep in mind to secure the perfect air-dry, which we’ve shared here.

The bubble braid holds a very special place in our hearts. We’ve been head over heels for this hairstyle for years now, so we’re happy to report it’s still as trendy as ever. There are a number of ways to rock this look, which is one of the main reasons we adore it. Dress it up or down—either way, it works for all your plans.

Box braids are one of our favorite protective styles because of their intricacy and versatility. While they can be worn a number of ways, there’s something so stunning about a half-up hairstyle. It just feels right, you know?

You really can’t go wrong with a high ponytail. We’re big fans of securing ours with a scrunchie to fake athleticism, but you can choose any hair securing method of your choice…though maybe not an elastic hair tie because we all know how damaging those are.

Coastal grandmother vibes are where it’s at. TikTok has taken off with this aesthetic and we don’t blame them—it’s so cozy. There are a number of elements that define coastal grandmother hair, though our favorite hairstyle is this easy half-up twist.

Place a statement headband atop day-old hair and you’re good to go. Depending on the aesthetic you’re trying to fit that day, there’s a statement headband for you. If you want to give off Gossip Girl vibes, try a bedazzled headband. Want to fit in with the jocks? Opt for a wraparound fabric headband. The options are limitless.

Life in plastic is fantastic—at least, that’s what you’ll think after trying on the Barbie ponytail for size. This sculpted masterpiece is an elegant back-to-school hairstyle that will bump you to the top of your class immediately. Well, when it comes to style anyway.

We know there’s been some discourse over the side part, but we’ll always defend it. It’s an especially great way to hide greasy or oily hair, and even cheat volume for those with thin strands. Not to mention, there’s really not much work required on your part to create this back-to-school hairstyle.

Nothing beats a French braid, especially when you’re rushing from class to class. You can add some accessories to make it your own or rock it as is to keep it simple.

E-girls may have brought this style to the forefront, but it’s one everyone can wear. Section the hair at the top of your head to tie it into small pigtails. If your hair is thin, be sure to tease the pigtails a bit to give them an extra bit of volume.

Who cares that summer is over? Beach waves are always in style. Embrace the mermaid vibes all school year long with some tousled texture by way of a beach wave perm. Or, keep things simple with a triple-barrel waver and some sea salt spray.

Yet another protective style we’re slightly obsessed with at the moment, goddess braids are ideal for those who are always on the go. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., your braids will stay in place and you won’t really have to worry about touching them up, no matter what you do during the day. The curled ends also offer an extra bit of dimension and fun to the braids.

Start off the new school year with a clean slate. We know the buzz cut isn’t for everyone, but it can be a very liberating hairstyle. And, you really won’t have to do much to your hair if you get the cut. All you’ll really need is a good SPF and you’ll be all set.

If you’re obsessed with Hulu’s The Bear and find yourself longing to copy Sydney’s style (that’s us), throw a hair scarf into your accessories mix. More than a chic accessory, it’s also functional—the sun won’t be able to damage your hair or scalp so long as you’re wearing one.

A post shared by Lana Summer (@lanasummer)

TikTok’s wolf cut is still as popular as when it first hit the scene. Now, we’re seeing a ton of curly-haired folks take on the style and we absolutely love it. Show off your ringlets with a cut that creates dimension and adds body in all the right places.

Rope braids have always been an option that we’ve shied away from, mainly because we found them difficult to pull off. Thanks to TikTok, we’ve discovered a rope braid hack from user @foxcraftcustom that is a game changer. We’ll be rocking the look more often, and you should do the same.

Y2K is here to stay, as evident by the spiky buns trend celebrities and influencers can’t get enough of. Listen, we adore the look too, which is why it’s on this list. You’ll need plenty of hair gel, bobby pins, and hairspray to create this back-to-school hairstyle, but the results are well worth the effort.

Crimped hair is fun, simply put. The style harkens back to the ‘90s and ‘00s, though you don’t need to completely fry your hair to get the crimped look. Even crimping a few strands throughout your hair is enough to make an impact.

The fringe, the layers, the texture, the dimension—everything about the modern shag feels oh so right. No matter if you have stick-straight hair or curly coils, there’s a way to get a shag haircut that works for your hair type.

A post shared by Chloe Anan (@chloescissorhandz)

Hear us out—we know this style has historically been reserved for red carpets, but you can just as easily pull this off while walking the school hallways. There’s no need to go all out and completely douse your hair, a little bit of hydration will do just the trick. Better yet, save it for days when you’re rushed getting out of the shower and walk to class with your hair slightly soaked.

Locs, dreads, goddess braids—all braided protective styles can benefit from some beads. Adorning your ends will help you make the back-to-school hairstyle all your own and can even heal your inner child in the process.

A post shared by Amandine 👩🏽‍🎨 (@amandineyk)

Though this French twist bun may look too intricate to recreate yourself, you’re sorely mistaken. All it takes is a few twists around a hair stick to get this bun. If you don’t have a hair stick handy, a pencil will always do.

Not feeling the middle part? Can’t be bothered to toss your hair in a side part? The zig-zag part is calling your name. You can slick it down for an extra sleek style, or use it to add some volume to otherwise flat strands.

This elegant updo will prove to your professors that you mean business…at least for the first few weeks of the semester. The key to not looking too stuffy is to have the face-framing layers pulled out. Be sure to curl them a bit for an added softness.

A post shared by Kathleen (@kathleen_hair)

The slicked-back ponytail is a classic and one you can never really go wrong with. No matter the class or occasion, it always works. Wear it high, low, or somewhere in between.

Bring an extra dose of fun to your back-to-school hairstyles with some butterfly clips. They complement any look and are super cheap (you can get a pack of 100 from Amazon for $6 here). Try not to get too stuck on one style, have fun and experiment with them a little bit.

A post shared by McKenna Boone (@mckennaboone_)

Space buns aren’t only a great hairstyle for festival season, they’re also a perfect back-to-school hairstyle. They’ll allow you to have some fun on days when your classes are feeling a little extra boring. And you can accessorize them any way you like it to make the style your own.

They were fun while they lasted.
